Intro Post Paige Hyatt

Hello! My name is Paige Hyatt. I am a senior studying Studio Art with a minor in Creative Wellness. I love ceramics and it is my main focus of my major. I like to go outside in nature on hikes and I love to swim. I also played golf in high school, and I still consider it to be one of my hobbies. I am excited for this course because I really enjoy learning about the history of art! I want to be able to interpret art better and understand readings about art better by the end of this course.

Me at The Met this summer (blogger ruined the resolution for some reason)

The piece of art I chose to share for my introduction is a platter by the French potter named Bernard Palissy. He is one of my all time favorite potters because of the colors he uses on his pieces and the intricate details. Palissy is very unique when it comes to his technique because he would mold each of the individual creatures for his platters. He would take dead specimens of the insects and animals he enjoyed looking at and then create a mold of them to turn them into identical replicas in clay. This summer I had the great opportunity to visit New York City and go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I saw this piece in person and absolutely loved it.

In my opinion, art is very subjective. Some individuals view a piece of art as beautiful where others might not enjoy the look of it at all. Art to me is also an aesthetic choice because we all have different vibes and decorate our lives differently. I judge a piece of art on its overall cohesiveness, its finish, and visible technique which was used. I focus a lot on composition (whether its balanced well or is visually pleasing) especially on paintings and intricate pottery, but I also like when a piece of art is finished very cleanly. I also enjoy especially on thrown pottery when good technique is clear, such as a nice trimmed foot and solid rim. I think that concept is very important too, so I enjoy a description of the art from the artist if it is in a gallery setting.

  1. Hi Paige! So cool that you got to visit The Met! I bet you didn't want to leave!

The piece you chose is really detailed and amazing! I like the mold idea and have seen other artists use it, but not with dead specimens! 'Realism' with a twist, like we are literally looking at a plate to eat, of insects and animals! Photos usually don't do pieces justice so I bet it was breathtaking in real life. Nice choice!
